Make Your Android Device Distraction Free: A Hands-On Guide
This tutorial is a hands-on guide to making your Android device distraction free. What does that mean? It means uninstalling the apps that are the prime causes of distraction, like Instagram, YouTube, Chrome, and the Play Store, and then making it harder to reinstall them.
TL;DR: You will uninstall your most distracting apps using the Android CLI from a laptop, then lock yourself out of easy reinstallation.
What You Will Need
A laptop and a USB cable. That is it.
Step 1: Install the Android CLI
Install the Android CLI on your laptop from the official website, or follow our Android CLI guide. Pick the command for your operating system below.
For Linux
curl -fsSL https://dl.google.com/android/cli/latest/linux_x86_64/install.sh | bash
For Mac
curl -fsSL https://dl.google.com/android/cli/latest/darwin_arm64/install.sh | bash
For Windows
curl.exe -fsSL https://dl.google.com/android/cli/latest/windows_x86_64/install.cmd -o "%TEMP%\i.cmd" && "%TEMP%\i.cmd"
Step 2: Install ADB and Set Your Environment Variables
Install the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) using the Android CLI:
android sdk install platform-tools
For the full walkthrough, see our Android SDK guide.
Add Environment Variables on Mac
echo 'export ANDROID_HOME="$HOME/Library/Android/sdk"' >> ~/.zshrc
echo 'export PATH="$ANDROID_HOME/platform-tools:$PATH"' >> ~/.zshrc
source ~/.zshrc
Add Environment Variables on Linux
echo 'export ANDROID_HOME="$HOME/Android/Sdk"' >> ~/.bashrc
echo 'export PATH="$ANDROID_HOME/platform-tools:$PATH"' >> ~/.bashrc
source ~/.bashrc
If you use zsh on Linux, replace ~/.bashrc with ~/.zshrc in all three commands.
Add Environment Variables on Windows (Command Prompt)
setx ANDROID_HOME "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Android\Sdk"
setx PATH "%ANDROID_HOME%\platform-tools;%PATH%"
Warning: setx has a 1024-character PATH limit. If your PATH is very long, use the GUI instead: Settings > System > About > Advanced system settings > Environment Variables, then add ANDROID_HOME and append %ANDROID_HOME%\platform-tools to Path.
Add Environment Variables on Windows (PowerShell, recommended)
[Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable("ANDROID_HOME", "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Android\Sdk", "User")
[Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable("Path", "$env:ANDROID_HOME\platform-tools;" + [Environment]::GetEnvironmentVariable("Path", "User"), "User")
Then restart your terminal. Windows does not have a source command, so new environment variables only apply to newly opened windows.
Step 3: Connect Your Device and Enable USB Debugging
Plug your USB (or USB-C) cable into your laptop and your Android device. On your phone, enable USB debugging from the developer options.
Step 4: Accept the Connection Prompt
Look at your phone. A prompt will appear asking whether to allow USB debugging from your laptop. Accept it, and check the box to always allow from this computer so you are not asked every time.
Step 5: Check That Your Device Is Connected
On your laptop, run:
adb devices
You should see your device listed with the status device. If it says unauthorized, go back to Step 4 and accept the prompt on your phone.
Step 6: Find the Apps You Want to Remove
Filter for the most common distracting apps and pick which ones to remove permanently from your phone.
YouTube
Full instructions in our YouTube removal guide.
adb shell pm list packages | grep -i youtube
Games (common engines and stores)
adb shell pm list packages | grep -iE "game|unity|epic|play\.google\.android\.apps\.games"
Social Media
adb shell pm list packages | grep -iE "facebook|instagram|twitter|tiktok|snapchat|reddit|pinterest|linkedin"
Full instructions in our Instagram removal guide.
Streaming and Video
adb shell pm list packages | grep -iE "netflix|prime|hotstar|jio.*tv|spotify|youtube|reels"
Shopping
adb shell pm list packages | grep -iE "amazon|flipkart|myntra|shein|temu|aliexpress"
Step 7: Remove the Selected Apps Permanently
Once you have the package name from Step 6, remove it with:
adb uninstall com.package.name
For example, to delete YouTube, Chrome, and the Play Store, you would run the following commands.
YouTube
adb uninstall com.google.android.youtube
Chrome
adb uninstall com.android.chrome
Or, for a system or stock version of Chrome:
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.android.chrome
Full instructions in our Chrome removal guide.
Play Store
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.android.vending
Full instructions in our Play Store removal guide.
And that is it. Your most distracting apps are gone, and reinstalling them takes real effort now. Enjoy the quiet. If you ever change your mind, our guide to restoring an uninstalled system app brings any of them back.
