How Do I Permanently Remove Instagram From My Android Device

How Do I Permanently Remove Instagram From My Android Device?

Instagram is one of the easiest apps to uninstall, and one of the easiest to reinstall at 11pm when your willpower is gone. This guide does both halves of the job: it removes the app completely, then closes the door on casual reinstallation, while leaving you a clear way back in if you change your mind. It is one piece of our guide to making your Android device distraction free.

TL;DR: Uninstall Instagram with adb uninstall com.instagram.android, then remove the Play Store to make reinstalling take real effort.

What You Will Need

A laptop with ADB set up (our Android SDK guide covers this in five minutes), a USB cable, and USB debugging enabled on your phone.

Step 1: Connect and Confirm

adb devices

Your phone should show up as device. If it says unauthorized, accept the debugging prompt on the phone screen.

Step 2: Find the Package

adb shell pm list packages | grep -i instagram

This will also surface Instagram Lite and Threads if you have them. Remove each one you want gone, one at a time.

Step 3: Uninstall

Unlike YouTube, Instagram is a regular app, so the plain uninstall works:

adb uninstall com.instagram.android

On Success, the app, its cache, and your login tokens are wiped from the device. If you also want Threads gone:

adb uninstall com.instagram.barcelona

Step 4: Verify

adb shell pm list packages | grep -i instagram

Empty output means it is gone.

Step 5: Make Reinstalling Harder

The app is gone, but the Play Store can put it back in thirty seconds. If your slip-ups happen late at night, remove the Play Store too, so reinstalling requires sideloading an APK from a laptop:

adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.android.vending

Read our Play Store removal guide before doing this, and keep our guide to restoring an uninstalled system app handy, so you are not locked out of updates for apps you do care about.

Changing Your Mind

Instagram is not a system app, so the uninstall is real: the only way back is a fresh download from the Play Store, or sideloading the APK. That friction is the entire point. When you decide to return, do it deliberately, from a laptop, in daylight.
